Unlike a traditional Fixed-Rate mortgage, an ARM features an interest rate that adjusts periodically. These adjustments are tied to an index such as the London Interbank Bid Rate, or LIBOR. You may know how an ARM works..but do you know why they exist? |

USA Today reported the other day that credit card issuers seem to be moving away from the practice of "universal default" -- where one late payment on a credit card or bill can raise the interest rate on a person's other credit cards -- as well as the cost of future mortgages, car loans, and insurance policies. (That's in addition to any fees that might have to be paid on the original late payment.)

I was anxious when asked to write a follow-up for the CardRatings.com feature Credit Card Minimum Payments Rising Soon since this is a pet topic of mine. There has been much confusion in the media regarding this topic and notable fear among consumers. My assignment was to "weed through" the hype and "filter out" the truth.
