My credit situation is pretty poor, due to divorce, losing my job, etc. (credit rpts in the 500's)
Now i'm starting to get back on my feet and with the help of Credit Boards i'm making in-roads to repairing my credit. I'm in the market for purchasing a new car and I have at least 3 that i'm looking at (credit apps put in to marv to look at). I have a quick question about the overall process & which side would be easier for approval. I'm looking at a large dealer for a used 05 Nissan and a smaller dealer (not a buy here/pay here type place) for 2 others. Would it be easier to get financing from the big dealership or the smaller one. Also what type of paperwork should I be expected to bring with me? I'm sure proof of income, i'm not sure if I should be expecting to bring anything else with me.

The dealership isn't the one that's going to approve you on the loan but the banks. So, I would probably say whichever has the stronger financial division. I would guess that a larger dealership would have more clout since they probably perform more transactions. A finance guy at a bigger dealership probably has more connections/favors to pull in due to the amount of business it sends to the banks.

You want to narrow down your choice to one car and then try to get it financed. Negotiate the cash price on each one and choose which is the best deal. With any used car, have your mechanic inspect it before signing. Do not waste a bunch of inq's and denials on cars that you would not buy even if you are approved.
If the approving lender stipulates more documents from you, you can provide them later. Unless you absolutely insist on taking the car home that day, which is usually not a good idea.

Well that's kind of why I was asking, I didn't want the dealerships pulling my credit a bunch of times to be denied at one dealership and then have to go to another one anyway. I'm leaning towards the bigger dealership I agree that they might have a stronger arm into financial agencies as well as the fact there vehicle is cheaper. So one other question, what would be the best approach?, let the sales person put in the credit app and then figure out something or just ask to talk to the finance mgr & let him know that my credit isn't good and to only apply to places that i'd have a chance to get approval. I have to say this whole thing is kind of nerve wracking. I'm making 75k and worried about applying for a loan of 20k with 5k down. Hopefully this process will be over soon...

its all about the finance guy not so much the size of the dealer. Ive seen some weak sucks at large dealerships who couldnt get a pack of cigarettes financed much less a 20k sled. I would be drilling the finance guy as to how much pull he has at various lenders and hopefully he has some numbers to prove it>

Any particular questions I should be asking the finance guy? And based on what he tells me when should I be comfortable to let him pull the trigger on pulling my credit?

I don't allow people to interview me for my qualifications.
However, I would happy to discuss a particular consumer's credit file after I have pulled it and discuss what I believe are viable options.
If your credit is viewed as less than pristine, you may be required to provide:
POI
POR
Phone Bill
5-8 References
Among other things just off the top of my head.

Pick a vehicle first.
If your auto enhanced score is below 520, it'll be really expensive in Georgia. Below 520 you will definately go into tertiary financing, some other have cutoffs at 580 and 560 respectively.
