Resident of Florida and we are in North Carolina for the summer and want to purchase a car. Do not want to tag it as NC and keep our florida plate. Is that considered a transfer and what are the details of a transaction like this?

depends on NC.. if they are a reciprical state then they will collect some sales tax but you will still have to register it when you get home to the tax collector. you do not have to get an NC tag.

If you have a current florida tag, you MUST have florida insurance in order to transfer that tag. I believe Florida and NO CAR are reciprocal when it comes to sales tax. Once registered in Florida, it would not be necessary to pay sales tax again when and if you return to my home state.

Yes, it has a florida tag but my daughter is using the car and going to college in NC so we got NC insurance. We also want to put her on the loan to build credit and she is planning on going back to Florida after school. Is that going to get too confusing?

you can't get NC insurance and use a Florida tag.

That makes sense because when I got the NC insurance it was alot less and they said I had to prove residence (which we own a home here) or else everyone would be doing that. I suppose it will catch up to us and just lucky so far.

ok, after more thought on this, it is more of a dual residency circumstance. Can I have insurance from either state or does the insurance have to be in the state where the tags are registered or where the car is parked?

Thanks for all your help : ) We did buy a new car - - Yah! We had the Florida tags transfered and have to prove proof of insurance in 30 days. They did not question the NC insurance but I better fix it before it gets messy. I was wondering if it is a better savings to keep the Florida tags or go ahead and get her registered in NC for the next three years while she is in school? I think there is a 50/50 chance of her returning (she has a BF from NC now.... so who knows : )

You don't understand. You transferred a Florida Tag. In order to do that you MUST have a Florida insurance policy.

Without getting that done FIRST, you would never be able to transfer the registration to the State of North Carolina.

Undoubetdly you only have a temporary registration now, if you let that expire withought getting Florida insurance in order to validate the Florida registration, you won't believe the headaches you will go thru in North Carolina. You can't transfer an unvalidated registration, both Florida and North Carolina are reciprocal states.
